Ahh… I used to cycle past that view on the way into work every day. I loved the road just next to here where you can see through a crooked street past an ancient church and then again, the glassy gherkin looms up behind. Fabulous.

I used to work across the square from the gherkin, from before it was built. So it was cool to see it go up, from scratch to impressive finish. I was invited to the gherkin recently to talk at a breakfast meeting thingy and we were right on the top floor. Was a funny feeling to be able to look down on my old office (and even see my old desk through the window, 5 years on).

What made it weirder was that my old building was being demolished, from the bottom up. The old building has a central core, with floors hanging off this core. The way they’re demolishing it means they’re taking off the floors one by one, starting with the bottom one and ending with the 10th (the one i was on), then they’ll demolish the core tower. I saw as it was halfway demolished and it looked extraordinary. Quite a lot of pictures of it about on the web. eg this one: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1368/1055477270_13c8c33df9.jpg?v=0

Very cool.
