I guess this is number three in a series of TV lines that I liked. Better than number 2, but not a patch on number 1.
From the pilot of A Town Called Eureka
Some context: After a 'mishap' in the town due to a science experiment gone rather wrong, and they need Jack to stand in as sheriff, he is being shown around this top secret facility, where they do oodles of really amazing ahead of everything science research. Allison is saying how the town has the best schools, the best this, the best that, and the best health care.

I thought numbers 1 and 2 were a lot funnier than that. In fact, I didn’t see where the humour was in that clip at all.
2. D
Requires context.
Studio 60 is pure genius though, get the pilot to that.
3. Simon
Indeed…..Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is really rather good out in the states in September and who knows when here but it’s the new show from Aaron Sorkin (of West Wing fame).
Having seen the pilot, it’s not as jaw droppingly good as the opening to West Wing, but it’s slightly better than Sports Night and when you get to see Matthew Perry you actually don’t care that he used to be Chandler, which is, a Good Thing.
4. Simon
oo, and talking of great lines, here’s one from series 2 of the West Wing
Josh runs almost falling into Toby’s office
“Toby Toby, come quick, Sam’s getting his ass kicked by a girl”
Toby leaps out of his chair rushes through the door and catches in time to say
“Ginger, get the popcorn”
Genius I say.
5. Adrian
I would rank West Wing as a Level 1 program.
Eureka I would rank as a Level 2, but potentially even a level 3. I think it may be on par with Stargate (a level 2) but may drop to Stargate Atlantis levels (L3).
I’m would expect West Wing (never watched it) to have far better dialogue in general.
6. Gordon
You assign LEVELS to TV programmes? You are a bigger geek than I had realised.
And no, not that funny but yes, context is everything.
Will keep an eye out for Studio 60, although currently enjoying Huff, House and West Wing (for the first time!)
7. Destructor
I’m confused about how you can assign The West Wing lvl 1 status without having seen it.
I mean, it is a lvl 1 program, but your whole leveling system would have to readjust itself after watching the West Wing, as it is so awesome. Your lvl 2’s would become 3’s and 3’s become 4’s, just to make room for TWW’s greatness.
They’re playing the entire series from episode 1 on E4, perhaps now it the time to start collecting it?
8. Dragon
I think you should refer to them as tiers rather than levels. If you’re going to be that anal, you should go all the way.
And, even in context, this still isn’t that amusing. Maybe you had to be there.
9. Adrian
Dragononon, tiers is far more correct. I’ll tier-it up next time.
Dan, I’m assigning WW Tier 1 status based on awards and recommendations from people who’s opinions I value. Other programs on Tier 1 include BSG, Firefly, ER and House.
Tier 1 is unmissable. You can’t get any higher status than that.
I elected not to watch WW as I can’t afford the time to add another T1 program to my schedule. I still haven’t watched 24-S4 yet on DVD. Not enough time to add another thing in my life that I can’t not do.
it’s a bit like not taking a designer drug so that you don’t take it the second time. You know it’s going to be good so the only way to avoid being hooked is not to try it at all.
10. Destructor
But you’ll watch a Tier 2.5 show like Eureka? Isn’t that a really shitty cost/benefit analysis? You’re like, spending equal time for less payback.
11. Adrian
Well I’ve watched the Pilot and the second episode. So I’m not committed I’m just dating.
And I can watch a tier 2.5 show whilst doing other things, or whilst trying to sober up with a bottle of water at 2am or I can miss some of the episodes and not be too bothered. Or I can drop if after a few episodes.
If I watch WW, I’m committed for zillions of hours of TV. It’s more like a girlfriend than a fling.
12. D
I’m going to stick up for Adrian here and agree; I do something similar.
WW, House, Lost, Rescue Me and CSI Original are tier 1’s.
Then there’s the tier of things I’ve already seen but they’ve released DVD sets of them so I’m a sucker for, like ER, NYPD Blue, Space A&B and then there’s the stuff I haven’t watched yet but got the first seasons of because they came highly recommended like Deadwood and Entourage. Basically if the first season (not episode) sucks then I won’t ever watch it again.
13. matthew
D likes Space Above & Beyond! That show is such an under-rated gem. Just doesn’t get the praise (and didn’t get the budget) it deserves.
Just finished watching the complete season set of Firefly last night. Now there’s a tier 1 show if I ever saw one.
And Adrian, 24 season 4 is great, but season 5 is awesome. I’d call it… ‘tier 0’. :-)
14. Destructor
SAAB was pretty awesome, although I never saw the concluding episodes which is a real pain.
I am on my like, sixth watching of the Firefly boxed set. It’s even better than the last five times!
I thought S4 was sort-of weak comparatively (although still addictive like crack). Can anything ever live up to S2? Jack died! How do you top that?
House is totally sweet (if a little repetitive when you watch them in a row).
15. D
I did Firefly/Serenity in one weekend. It had ridiculous potential but was cut down in its prime, just like Space A&B and Farscape. How we’re cheated of the best TV and instead made to endure drivel like Charmed and Stargate.
I got American Gothic on a recent trip to the US but have been afraid to watch it again… can it possibly still be as good as I thought it was at the time?
16. Adrian
House has some of the best lines in it ever thought.
House: Ooh, Level Three. You should call Jack Bauer.
I saw the Farscape mini episode thing. It was ok.
Stargate is clearly a Tier2. Fun but no tier1.
American Gothic I watched on Sky last year again. It was not actually all that good. And still had no ending. And still didn’t seem to have any proper story arc. And still just ended suddenly with no idea what was going on.
There’s a dozen hours of my life I wont get back.
17. Princess of Darkness
AMERICAN GOTHIC!!! What I wouldn’t give to be able to watch that again. I don’t think it ever did end - probably just got cancelled. I’m sure there were more than a dozen eps though…
WW I give a Tier 4; possibly 5. Admittedly, I’ve never watched it, but I feel it in my water. It’s like Law & Order - watch it when your only other choice is Dr. Phil repeats.
18. matthew
American Gothic was good, but I didn’t see the whole series, and never caught up with it on any repeats.
Farscape was probably my second-favourite sci-fi seres ever, after Babylon 5. Both of them are definitely ‘tier 0’.
I still haven’t seen a single episode of Battlestar Galactica. :-(
19. Destructor
Matt, you have to get the BSG Seasons One boxed set right away! It’s the last good show. It’s totally awesome.
20. Dragon
I concur. Start with the mini-series then series one. You won’t be sorry.
SAAB wasn’t bad but didn’t have the same pathos as BSG.
Dark Skies was a series that started off really poorly then, suddenly, in the last three episodes, got really damn good.
That quote from House? Now that’s funny. Even out of context.
21. D
Yeah but Adrian, you watch Stargate. Watch the movie; save yourself eleven seasons of shite.
American Gothic, now available on DVD as a complete season, including the four episodes I never saw cause Channel Four gave up before the end of the season, I just remember it as being the best thing to watch at the time, everyone else was watching Friends season one.
Babylon 5 seasons 1 through 4 are as good as TV sci-fi gets. Season 5 is an exercise in pointlessness, but then JMS did wrap everything up nicely in his season 4 finale, what a way to end a show only to have it revived for nothing.
22. Adrian
So what happened in the last four episodes?
23. D
I’ll have to watch and see…
