My ansaphone used to have the message, ‘I’m screening my calls right now because I’m trying to avoid someone. If you leave a message, and I don’t get back to you, then it’s you’.
This was all very amusing in a self-important way until I actually forgot to return a call and it was taken seriously.
If you don’t check your answerphone for messages, why not disconnect it so that people don’t have the option of leaving any messages at all, important or not?

Strangely people, and especially the bank, leave very important messages that I get several weeks after it was really important I hear them.

So that people calling my land line get given my mobile number and can call that instead.
Although considering this doesn’t work, you may have a point.
