- Ok – well £176 for lessons is extortion (IMHO) – do I really need these lessons or is being trained by my peers something which is possible?
- Nat
- Depends - as long as Adrian isn't having a panic attack half way down a frankly not very steep slope about 20 mins before all the lifts were going to shut...
- Adrian
- It’s easy to say the slope wasn’t steep when you’ve been skiing since you were 5 ....
- Nat
- That doesn't affect your perspective of 'steep'. It either is or it isn't steep...!
- Adrian
- Oh it so does.
Slope is a factor of the actual slope gradient, the skier/boarders skill, and the relative sanity (insanity, stupidly, bravery as you wish) of the skier/boarder.
Slope = gradient / (skill x insanity)
So the more the actual gradient the greater the slope.
The greater the skill the less the slope.
The more insane you are the less the slope.
So for example:
- Nat = high / (high x very sane) = Yeah its got a slope but I can do it easy
- Dan = high / (good x insanse) = Slope what slope
- James = high / (very good x sane) = Swooosh
- Adrian = high / (low x very sane) = Oh my god it’s a cliff
[Update: To answer James' question (comment 3 below), I've now added some video clips. Click on the links above. Needs Quicktime]

1. Tyrannize
All very nice guys - but it doesn’t answer my question !!!
2. Gordon
I’m with you Adrian. If I’m currently perched on two slippery pieces of wood and there is ANY gradient which is covered with equally slippy material (snow/ice) then it might as well be a cliff. Every bone, nerve and shred of common sense will be urging, nay FORCING, me to sit my ass down.
But you get extra geek points for turning that into an equation.

So why is Nat ‘very sane’ and I’m only ‘sane’. I beg to differ.
wibble.
4. Adrian
I’ve attached videos above now to explain that.
5. Chris
I’m more concerned that Adrian considers himself to be “very sane”.
6. Matthew
Dan is quite clearly ‘insane’ as well as possibly ‘a danger to himself and others’. Adrian is very good at climbing cliffs strapped to a snowboard.

wipes away tears of laughter
that, my friend, is an absolutely fantastic group of clips, illustrating the skiing / snowboarding trip perfectly.
you can actually hear (possibly ross) saying “you’re ruining the jump” as they watch you struggle up the slope.
priceless. kudos for posting it.
8. Adrian
Yeah that’s Ross.
9. Stuart
Sheer unadulterated brilliance.
Well done that man!
