My parents were always The Beatles, Cliff Richard, Neil Diamond.
I would have been more The Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd.

In fairness I think Cliffy Boy was just my mom, but our tastes musically have always been quite disparate. It's not that I disliked my parents choice of music (although they often disliked mine) but just that my taste came from somewhere else. Many people would question me using the word taste but to them I say "Screw you mutt breath". At least I have my own unique brand of music taste, which in all honestly is most likely better than yours.

Relative to your parents era, what's the differential in your music taste to theirs?

Hendrix and Sly & the Family Stone versus the Seekers and a bunch of classical stuff - my parents never seem to have “got” pop music. Popular music stopped at trad. jazz ;-)

My parents are rock n roll fans. For ‘fans’, read ‘obsessives’. Personally, I like their music. I can often be seen frugging around my living room in the wee hours to a spot of Elvis. But this appreciation is not in any way whatsoever mutual, because their passion for music stops dead at about 1962 and therefore anything made after that is, with no exceptions. ‘shit’. Not even up for consideration. Even the Beatles are too modern for them, so sadly The Darkness don’t stand a chance. I am sure that if they’d been born in my time our actual musical taste isn’t so different that we wouldn’t be listening to pretty much the same kind of stuff though.

As my Dad’s a professional guitar player (who has performed ‘When I’m sixty-four’ to Paul McCartney and John Lennon many, many years ago) I grew up with quite an eclectic taste in music. I don’t think there was any sixties equivalent to alternative/industrial though so working out a differential is a little tricky. And I quite like most of what my dad likes too.

My in-laws, on the other hand, are a different story. That’s definitely a Cliff & Petula vs The Stones & The Doors.

My Dad had great taste in music that I tend to agree with… Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple. I think I did OK there :)

My Dad generally has good taste, right up until the appearance of Celine Dion and the Dixie Chicks. He has a fantastic collection of 70s rock - Free, Cream, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, ELO, Yes, that sort of thing, all on vinyl, and all of which he refuses to let me inherit early. I’ve also seen original vinyl pressings of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” and Carole King’s “Tapestry” about the house, too.

Worryingly, though, there are also several albums of broadway showtunes (which are generally attributable to my mother) and a couple of Carpenters albums.

Yes Adrian, frugging.

My parents listened to a lot of the music I still listen to now; Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, jazz, Creedence, the Band. The only battle we ever had was when we went through the 80’s. They have forgiven me. I still buy music for my Dad or send something I think he will like his way. Lately it is Buena Vista Social Club or Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers or the Martin Scorcese Blues series had a disc of English blues. Jeff Beck, Cream, Clapton, and believe it or not Lulu doing a KILLER version of Cry me a River. Tom Jones too. Yup. Tom Jones. I put it on and make people guess who it is, they never guess right.

I did no such thing.

Or if I did I don’t remember. Which is as good as not doing it.

Hmm..I guess I would say that what my parents listened to greatly influenced me. My dad is more Led Zepplin, Beatles, Stones guy and then he likes folk music and old country. My mom is definitely r&b, jazz, and then she likes Eric Clapton, old Rod Stewart and I’m ashamed to admit: 80’s hair bands. So, I like all of the above minus the hair bands.

Every summer, my parents would put me and my siblings into a van and drive us endless distances around the heartland of New Zealand. On said trips, my dad would play these mix tapes of all his albums, and without conciously realizing it, all of us have assimilated a huge range of music, from many decades, and I think those tapes are the basis of my musical preferences today.

What sort of music? Well, let’s just say I bought my dad ‘Permission to Land’ for Christmas this year and he thought it was great. On the other hand, I realized to my horror that I can sing the entire back catalog of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, despite never intentionally listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

ps- thanks for this post, Adrian- I just called my Dad and said thanks for the mix tapes.

My mom dated the drummer from the Shadows when she was younger!

Ooh ah, quick claim to fame.
