Does anyone know what the appropriate amount of time one is required to let pass before turning the light back on and reading some more because clearly you are not going to fall asleep.

As a long-time insomniac, the answer is NEVER. Lying in your bed AS IF you are asleep is, physiologically speaking, not that dissimilar to actually sleeping. Your brain doesn’t sleep, which means you feel awful the next day, but your body is given time to rest and recover. So, when you can’t actually sleep, pretend to sleep. It’s the closest you’ll get.

I was just going to add, if you have problems sleeping (and my God, aren’t there a lot of insomniacs on the net?), what you mustn’t do is reward the behaviour (i.e. by watching TV, having a drink or something). Experts reckon, if you have to get up, its best to do something you really don’t like (i.e. the ironing) and you will soon feel tired again! Hope you got some rest.

I do the reading thing. If I toss and turn for more then 10 minutes, I pick up the book again. Sooner if I know that my eyes are just not in the mood to stay closed.

I sometimes found that if I exhausted myself, sleep would come more easily.
Also, getting up early is meant to help. I wouldn’t know, however, since I never get up early.

i’ve been known to go to another room and read or watch TV if i can’t sleep (and there’s someone in the bed with me). with my last ex, this sometimes led to a fight. what an insecure dork he was. hey, if i’m not sleepy, i am not going to lie in the bed for 2 or 3 hours, wide awake. i think that is ridiculous. i’d rather do something semi-productive.

It depends on the severity of leg twitch

Ketamine baby, ketamine. However, my insomnia is caused by pain, and it costs me $80 per prescription. One time I lost about 20 bucks worth in a syringe mishap.
